A squirrel costs nothing, has 0 power and 1 health, and the squirrel tribe. The side deck contains 10 of them, and each battle deals you one to start. You cannot campfire them and you cannot fuse them at the mycologists. After the third painting, the squirrels become bees. In Kaycee’s Mod the Squirrel Fish challenge replaces them with aquasquirrels.

Reading
“How many squirrels” has two answers and they are both true. Ten live in the side deck. One is in your opening hand of a fight, and more arrive as the side deck is drawn. If you add them up as “I hold ten at once,” you are describing the deck, not the hand. The hand has its own cap. I do not have two sources for that cap’s exact number, so it stays off this page and off the mechanics page.
The squirrel statue in the cabin is a different object. It holds the special dagger, which is why “squirrel knife” is a search. The dagger is an item: it digs out the eye and adds four weight if you use it on the scale. It is not a sigil on the squirrel card. Totem heads can still target the squirrel tribe once you own the squirrel head from the drawer puzzle. That is the squirrel totem people want, and it buffs the sacrificial bodies, which is as strong as it sounds.
