Does Inscryption Delete Your Files?

No. The Archivist does not delete the file you pick. He reads the size and the date and builds a card from them. If that card dies, a text note appears next to the file. Inside the note, P03 says he cannot actually delete it and asks you to delete it yourself for the scene. On PC, move the selected original file out of its original location and win the fight for Agonizing Remorse; the generated note is not the target. Consoles hammer the captive file instead.

What the two stories are

The battle dialogue says your file is gone. The note and the achievement text say it is not. I am keeping both, because the scare is part of the scene and the note is part of the result. Stack Exchange’s thread and the wiki achievement page are the two places I used. I will not paste anyone’s real path or filename.

Size becomes damage: bytes 0, kilobytes 1, megabytes 2, gigabytes 4, terabytes 8. Age becomes the captive file’s stats in bands of 360 days. None of that requires the bytes to leave your disk. If you were about to unplug the machine, you can finish the fight.

FAQ

Does the Archivist delete real files?

No. A note may appear beside the file you picked.

Which file does Agonizing Remorse check?

The selected original file, rather than the generated note. The wiki says moving it away from its original location and winning the fight qualifies on PC. Consoles use the hammer on Captive File.
